The Beijing Internet Association, formerly known as the Beijing Association of Online Media, is a nonprofit agency established on October 26, 2004, by city-based internet service providers together with internet-related training and research institutes and concerned individuals, after getting an approval from the Beijing Administration Office of NGOs. The association, with 104 members, got its current name on July 17, 2012. On April 14, 2014, it was selected as a 5A-class social organization of the city for 2013.

Aims of the Association

Abide by the Constitution, laws, state regulations and policies as well as moral code; Adhere to the principle of "promoting internet proliferation, advancing scientific development, legal supervision and guaranteeing security"; Promote the socialist core value system; Publicize healthy internet culture; Emphasize social responsibility; Establish a self-regulation mechanism; Standardize professional norms; Coordinate relations among members; Safeguard interests of members; Build up the industry's image; Maintain information security and social stability; Develop an internet culture with Chinese characteristics.

Organizations

The Beijing Internet Association is made up of seven committees, namely the "Online Media Council," "Media Convergence Research Committee," "Internet Public Welfare Alliance," "Law Committee," "Interactive Communications Committee," "Data Analysis Committee" and the "Internet Security Technology Committee."

Beijing Internet Illegal Information Reporting Hotline

The Beijing Internet Illegal Information Reporting Hotline was launched in April 2006. Its number and email address were published on major local websites to encourage citizens to report any illegal online activities. It aims to protect netizens' interests and facilitate communication between the government, the public and website operators.

Beijing Online Media Council

Established on April 13, 2006, the online media council, which operates under the Beijing Internet Association, is tasked with supervising and assessing local online media outlets that have a self-regulation mechanism in place.

Internet Supervision Volunteer

In May 2006, the first batch of internet supervision volunteers were recruited nationwide. The establishment of the online information supervision system, with public participation, aims to comb out illegal and harmful content uploaded by Beijing-based websites and improve self-discipline in the industry. The volunteers, with their real names registered, mainly track down obscene online content and detect violations among website operators and internet users.

Mom Jury

Established in January 2010, the Mom Jury operating under the Beijing Internet Association aims to create a safe internet for children and adolescents. It has a mandate to tip off authorities about online indecency deemed harmful for children along with a jury proposal on countermeasures. The jury acts as a bridge among the public, website operators and watchdog agencies.

Self-regulation Inspector

At its third assessment meeting on August 27, 2010, the online media council suggested a mechanism for self-discipline inspection, with each website required to nominate inspectors tasked with promoting a healthy internet culture. The inspectors would ensure that illegal, immoral, pornographic, fraudulent content and information that may threaten national security and social stability were not published online. The inspectors are responsible to their websites but function independently from the editorial team and other inner supervision units.

China Internet Media Football League

Kicked off in 2005, the China Internet Media Football League games are held annually by the Beijing Internet Association. As the biggest sporting event in the industry, the tournament consists of the group and knockout stages and aims to enhance communication among online media outlets, boosting the construction of an internet culture with Chinese characteristics. It has smoothly developed, and providing an opportunity for internet workers to display their diligence and enterprising spirit.

Internet Media Employees' Spring Festival Party

Starting from 2008, internet enterprises in Beijing would gather before the Spring Festival for a special celebration featuring original performances inspired by mainstream online trends to showcase the talents of internet workers. It creates an opportunity for the people in the industry to enjoy the holiday spirit with each other after a whole year of work and to share their experiences and ideas for innovation in a special atmosphere highlighting the unique characteristics and culture of the internet industry.

Online Spring Festival Gala

Starting from 2010, the Beijing Internet Association and its members would stage an online gala during the Lunar New Year holiday, promoting Chinese folk culture, Spring Festival customs and the core values of the nation,organized“The Spring Festival folk custom”、“The dinner on New Year's Eve(2011)”、“Chinese Dragon——Good luck and happiness to you(2012)”,“Folk Handicraft and Folk Art(2013)”、“Folk-custom and etiquette culture(2014)”. It explores ways to publicize folk culture through new media as the advancement in internet technology creates new ways in which traditional culture can be better appreciated by the public. Meanwhile, through organizing the annual gala, the participating websites have cultivated staff specializing in traditional culture.

Internet Public Welfare Alliance

On January 17, 2012, the Beijing Internet Association joined hands with its member websites to launch the Internet Public Welfare Alliance that aimed to boost charity and public welfare activities online by using the association's influence to integrate related online channels, forums and communities. After its founding, the alliance, supported by technology and large outreach of its member websites, succeeded in improving the exchange of public welfare-related information online, combining the advantages of the members and setting up a nationwide platform to promote the public welfare, which also bolstered core socialist values. The establishment of the alliance helped garner support for public welfare both online and offline and reinforced the efforts of single websites, providing a new mode for the promotion of public welfare.

《New Internet Times》(Monthly)

The 《New Internet Times》 is an A-class in-house newsletter of the city published by the Beijing Internet Association. Focusing on the development of the internet industry in the city, it is tasked with publicizing state and municipal policies related to the development of the industry, giving updates on the latest achievements in the industry and encouraging learning and communication among the people in the industry. It's also expected to help foster a healthy internet culture and become a trendsetter for the country's internet industry.
